There are approximately 15,000 Sisters of Mercy throughout the world, and we are currently the largest group of Religious Sisters in Australia, numbering approximately 1800 in 17 congregations.

The Parramatta Congregation consists of 88 sisters, living either in small communities or individually.  Although we are mostly located in and around the Sydney Metropolitan Area, a few of us live and work in  Melbourne, Peak Hill and New Zealand.

Our ministries include  (but are not limited to),

  • primary, secondary and adult education
  • education for social justice
  • counselling and spiritual renewal work
  • parish work both urban and rural
  • social work
  • visitation
  • pastoral support of refugees
  • health care
  • aged care
  • history and art research
  • administration

The Parramatta Congregation along with the others in Australia and Papua New Guinea form the Institute of Sisters of Mercy Australia (ISMA).  Through ISMA, some of us also work with the poor and refugees in various other countries.
