Celebrating Refugee Week June 19-25

Last weekend, Sisters Margaret Shepherd, Johanna Conway, Marg Hinchey and Ms Cecily May attended the launch of Refugee Week 2016. The event, organised by RCOA, the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), Settlement Services International (SSI) and CORE Community Services was held at the section of Callan Park recently given for a place for refugees’ needs to be administered.

The Inner West Refugee Hub, is largely the result of the former Leichhardt Council’s constant lobbying of government to provide this amenity, with the initiative being taken forward by the Inner West Council (created through the recent forced amalgamations of former Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils), which was confirmed as a "Refugee Welcome Zone" at the event. The theme of Refugee Week 2016 is With Courage Let Us All Combine, draws on the Australian National anthem (Verse 2), and recognises not only the enormous contribution to Australian society by refugees, but also the courage of those who speak out against injustice.
