Parramatta Mercy Sister to speak to Joint Select Committee

The Sisters of Mercy Parramatta welcomed the opportunity in August 2014, to make a written submission to the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Following this written submission, the Sisters were invited to speak to the Committee, and Sr Margaret Hinchey, a passionate social justice advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, will represent the Parramatta Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy at a session in Sydney today. 

In her presentation, on behalf of the Congregation, Sr Margaret will affirm the efforts by the Committee to bring about timely and necessary reforms to the Australian Constitution, while offering suggestions and responses to a number of the Committee's recommendations concerning the process of the movement towards a referendum, its timing, and the content of proposed Constitutional changes. As we draw closer to the possibility of this Referendum on constitutional recognition, bipartisan agreement, and the full, prior, informed consent of Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander Peoples to any proposed changes are imperative. Through her Lifequest Ministry, Sr Margaret works tirelessly to provide education on, and raise awareness of, injustice in both local and international contexts.
